Is the UV output hazardous?

Yes. Ultraviolet radiation can cause severe burns to eyes and skin, a few seconds of direct exposure can equal a full day in the sun. Always use shielding, UV protective eyewear, and protective clothing around the running system.

Why don't UV burns hurt right away?

Thermal burns are felt immediately, but UV burns typically aren't felt for several hours. Eye exposure produces "welders burn", a sand-in-the-eyes feeling that takes days to heal, which is why protection matters even when nothing feels wrong.

Can I look at the beam with glasses on?

No. Never look directly at the operating light guide LEDs, with or without protective glasses. Some effects of UV radiation can cause permanent damage to the eyes.

What eye protection is required?

UV/IR-rated safety eyewear whenever the system is operating. Every SkyBeam ships with a pair of UV0496 shade-5.0 protective glasses; the sport-contour UV2232 is an optional alternative.

What should operators wear?

UV protective glasses and protective clothing at all times while working in the vicinity of the curing system; when operating in production, protective clothing and cotton gloves are required.

Uvitron's UV1422 UV-shielding cotton work gloves are available as an accessory.

Can UV exposure cause lasting harm?

It can. Some effects of UV radiation can cause permanent eye damage, and extended skin exposure can lead to skin cancer. Treat the source with the same respect as intense sunlight and enforce PPE and shielding.

How fast can skin burn under the beam?

A few seconds of direct exposure can cause redness (erythema) equal to a day in the sun. It's temporary and won't blister, but it's a clear sign to tighten your shielding and PPE.

Do I need shielding around the workstation?

Yes, all installations should incorporate adequate shielding of radiated UV to prevent eye and skin burn of the operator and anyone passing through the work area. Because a spot system delivers light to a small localized area, effective shielding is usually straightforward to build.

What materials make good UV shielding?

Sheet metal, UV-blocking acrylic, polycarbonate, or welding curtains. Design custom shielding with extreme care so personnel can't be exposed to harmful UV radiation.

Does the SkyBeam scatter much UV?

Relatively little, spot systems by nature deliver light to a small localized area, so the amount of scattered light is minimal. Shielding and PPE are still required; scattered UV is not harmless.

Why does the output look faint or bluish?

The LEDs emit a very narrow wavelength band, so their intensity can appear deceptively low to the eye. It's still high-power ultraviolet light that harms eyes and skin, never judge safety by how dim the bluish light looks.

What is the emergency safety interlock?

Terminal pins 11 (EMER) and 12 (COM1) form an interlock loop: when the two signals are disconnected, exposure stops; when connected, the system operates according to its current settings. It's the hook for e-stops and guard switches.

How should the interlock be used on a line?

On automated production lines, connect the EMER/COM1 interlock ports to an emergency-stop or safety-guard interlock switch, so opening a guard or hitting the e-stop cuts UV output and protects the operator from exposure.

Do the light guide tips get hot?

Yes. High temperatures can be present at the output end of the guides, on the curing LED surfaces, and on their lenses. After power is removed, allow everything to drop back to room temperature before touching.

Is there a fire risk?

Placing a guide output tip on or near flammable surfaces while the LEDs operate, or while the tip is still hot, could result in fire. Keep flammables clear and never rest the output on heat-sensitive material.

What surface should parts sit on for curing?

Always cure parts on a metallic or other non-flammable surface, never on anything heat sensitive. The beam can deliver significant heat to whatever it's aimed at.

Is there an electrical shock hazard?

Yes, high input voltage and current energize the internal LED power supply. Never remove the sheet-metal cover before switching off power, disconnecting the input cord, and waiting 5 minutes for the energy storage capacitors to discharge.

Can I service the electronics myself?

No. The sheet-metal enclosure should not be opened, and the electrical system should be serviced only by Uvitron factory-trained personnel. Broken tamper-proof seals also void the warranty.

How long should it cool before maintenance?

Power off, unplug the cord, and wait a minimum of 10 minutes, that lets the light guide return to room temperature and the internal power supply capacitors discharge before you proceed.

Does it protect itself from overheating?

Yes. Each light guide has a built-in temperature sensor; fan speed rises as LED temperature increases, and over-temperature protection shuts the channel down (fault code E40) to prevent damage.

What do I do after an E40 overheat fault?

Allow the unit to cool below 80 °C, then run the unit and guide in a cooler environment. If you're using a convection-cooled guide on a heavy duty cycle, consider switching to the fan-cooled type.

How do I stop UV output instantly?

Press the front-panel Stop/Run button to abort all channels, send a second trigger (foot switch or PLC) to end a single exposure, open the EMER interlock circuit, or shut off the rear panel Input Power Switch.

What does the Stop/Run button do?

It aborts exposure on all UV channels at once and must be pressed again before exposures can restart. You also press it before making parameter changes in Setup.

Are there UV warnings on the unit itself?

Yes, the front panel carries hazard symbols and the printed warning "UV protection of eyes & skin required" directly below the display.

How do I protect people passing by?

Shield the work area so anyone passing through can't catch direct or scattered UV, eye and skin burns don't require looking straight at the source. Sheet metal, UV-blocking acrylic, polycarbonate, and welding curtains all work.

What safety glasses are included?

One pair of UV0496 UV protective glasses, 5.0 shade, sized to fit over prescription eyewear (OTG). Extra pairs and the UV2232 sport-contour style are available as accessories.

Is a full face shield available?

Yes, the UV1890 UV protective face shield, a lift-up design with 5.0 shade, is the accessory Uvitron lists as ideal for maximum protection.

Are ordinary glasses enough protection?

No. The manual calls for UV/IR-rated protective eyewear, the included UV0496 shade-5.0 glasses or equivalent, and even with rated eyewear you must never look directly at the operating LEDs.

Can the beam heat nearby surfaces?

Yes, because of the system's high output power, the guide tip can deliver significant heat to any nearby surface it's aimed at. Fixture guides so the output can't inadvertently point at flammable surfaces or scatter UV light.

Is the key switch a safety feature?

It's a process-security feature: with the key removed, operators can't alter approved parameters like power and exposure time, protecting your validated cure settings from unauthorized or accidental changes.

Any cautions when plugging in guides?

Yes: only connect or disconnect light guides with controller power off, and avoid ESD at the rear connectors. Hot plugging can damage the guide or controller.

Will exposure from the unit tan skin?

Brief exposure causes temporary redness that won't produce blistering or tanning, since only a small amount of the radiation penetrates deeply. Extended exposure is another matter, it can lead to skin cancer, so prevent exposure entirely.

What training do operators need?

At minimum, the manual should be read carefully before anyone installs or operates the equipment, and operators must follow the UV, electrical, and high-temperature precautions, PPE on, shielding in place, no direct viewing of the LEDs.

Is protective clothing mandatory in production?

Yes, when operating the unit in production, the use of protective clothing and cotton gloves is required per the manual's UV safety warning.

Does window glass block the UV?

Mostly, yes, even window glass reduces transmission or blocks most UV wavelengths, and the attenuation grows stronger as wavelengths get shorter. That's also why curing through cover materials favors longer wavelengths like 395 or 405 nm.

Does the buzzer announce system events?

Yes, with BUZZ ON set in the system parameters, the unit beeps for system events. You can set BUZZ OFF if your process demands quiet.
