Why Your UV Adhesive Won’t Cure, a Troubleshooting Checklist
A UV adhesive that "won’t cure" almost always fails for one of five reasons, and they are quick to rule out in order. Work the checklist below and you’ll find the culprit, it is rarely the adhesive itself and almost always the light reaching it, the dose, or the surface.
Cure needs the right wavelength, enough dose, and line of sight to the joint, on a clean surface, with the top layer able to finish against air. Miss any one and the adhesive stays liquid or tacky no matter how long you expose. A radiometer turns most of these from guesswork into a number.

Step by Step
- 1 Check the wavelength match. Confirm the source band matches the adhesive datasheet. A 365 nm-only adhesive under a 405 nm source will not cure. A broad-spectrum arc removes this variable, if it cures under the arc but not your LED, it is a wavelength mismatch.
- 2 Check the dose. Measure intensity at the joint with a radiometer and compare exposure time to the datasheet dose. Too far away or too short an exposure under-doses; move the guide closer or expose longer.
- 3 Check for oxygen inhibition. A liquid-under, tacky-on-top result is oxygen inhibiting the surface layer of an acrylate. Increase dose, hold the source closer, or use a chemistry formulated for open-air cure.
- 4 Check for shadowing. If part of the joint is hidden from the light, that part stays liquid. Reposition, add a splitter angle, or switch to a dual-cure adhesive for hidden volume.
- 5 Check the surface. Oils, mould release, and moisture stop both wetting and cure. Clean per the adhesive spec and retest.

Why won’t my UV adhesive cure?

My UV adhesive is hard on top but liquid underneath, why?
The light isn’t reaching the bottom. Either the film is too thick or too shadowed for your intensity, or the wavelength doesn’t penetrate. Use more intensity, a longer wavelength that penetrates deeper, or a dual-cure adhesive for the shadowed volume.
Could a weak lamp be why my cure fails?
Yes. Arc-lamp output drops over life and light guides lose transmission. Measure intensity at the joint with a radiometer; if it is well below baseline, a fresh lamp module (UV1866) or guide often restores cure.
