Fixing a Tacky Surface After UV Curing (Oxygen Inhibition)
A UV acrylate that cures hard underneath but stays slightly tacky on top is almost never under-cured in bulk, it is oxygen inhibiting the very surface layer. It is one of the most common and most misdiagnosed UV finishing problems, and there are four clean fixes.
Atmospheric oxygen quenches the free-radical cure at the exposed surface of acrylate chemistries, leaving a thin uncured skin while the bulk hardens normally. More energy, less oxygen, or a chemistry designed for open-air cure each defeat it.

Step by Step
- 1 Confirm it’s surface-only. Check that the bulk is hard and only the top is tacky. That signature is oxygen inhibition, not bulk under-cure.
- 2 Increase the surface dose. Raise intensity or exposure at the surface, a higher-flux guide or a closer, longer final pass. More radical flux at the surface overwhelms the inhibition for many adhesives.
- 3 Exclude oxygen if needed. For stubborn chemistries, cure under a nitrogen blanket or press a UV-transparent film against the surface so air can’t reach it during cure.
- 4 Switch to an air-cure formula. Some acrylates and most cationic (epoxy) UV chemistries are formulated to cure tack-free in air. If surface finish is critical, choose one of these.
- 5 Verify tack-free. Confirm the surface is dry to a gloved touch before moving on. Record the dose that achieved it so the process repeats.
Common Pitfalls
- Assuming a tacky top means the whole joint is under-cured, it is usually just the surface layer.
- Wiping the tacky layer away as a "fix", it returns every cure until you address the inhibition.
- Using a low-intensity source for surface cure, inhibition wins unless you deliver enough surface dose or exclude oxygen.
