Setting Up a Safe UV Spot Curing Station

A spot curing source concentrates intense UV, and UV is invisible, operators can be overexposed without feeling it until later. Setting up the station right, once, protects eyes and skin every shift. It is quick, inexpensive, and non-negotiable.

Direct and reflected UV from a curing source can injure eyes and skin. The controls are the standard hierarchy: block the beam path (shielding and shutters), protect the operator (UV-rated eyewear and covered skin), and prevent accidental exposure (interlocks and disciplined shutter use). Do all three and the hazard is well managed.

Step by Step

  1. 1 Protect the eyes. Everyone in line of sight wears UV/IR-rated eyewear (shade 5.0). Ordinary safety glasses are not UV-rated; the beam and its reflections both count.
  2. 2 Cover skin and shield the path. Keep hands and forearms out of the beam, and put a shield or enclosure around the exposure point so stray and reflected UV is contained.
  3. 3 Gate the beam. Use the shutter and foot pedal so the source only emits during a deliberate cure, never a beam left open on the bench.
  4. 4 Add interlocks where fixtured. On an enclosed or automated station, interlock the guard so the source cannot fire when it is open.
  5. 5 Follow the manual’s safety section. Each system’s manual details its specific hazards and controls, make it the station’s standing procedure and train every operator on it.

Common Pitfalls

  • Using ordinary safety glasses, they are not UV-rated; you need shade-5.0 UV/IR eyewear.
  • Leaving the beam open on the bench, gate it with the shutter/foot pedal so it only fires on demand.
  • Forgetting reflected UV, a bright reflection off a fixture or part can expose eyes just as direct beam does.

What eye protection do I need for UV spot curing?
