UV Curing Safety: Setting Up a Safe Workstation

Spot UV curing is one of the easier industrial light processes to make safe: the energy is confined to a small spot, so scattered light is minimal and shielding is straightforward. But the beam itself is intense enough to burn eyes and skin in seconds, and UV injuries have a nasty property, you don't feel them until hours later. This guide walks through the hazards by wavelength band and the controls that belong at every curing station: eyewear, shielding, interlocks, and heat management. It supplements, never replaces, your site's EH&S procedures and the system manuals on our tech support page.

Know your source's spectrum

Ultraviolet light divides into UVA (315–400 nm), UVB (280–315 nm), and UVC (100–280 nm), and the shorter the wavelength, the more biologically aggressive the light. LED systems like the SkyBeam and SkyWand emit a narrow UVA band and essentially no UVB or UVC. The arc-lamp SunSpot 2 radiates broad-spectrum output across 275–650 nm, which includes some UVB/UVC content, that breadth is what cures certain chemistries, and it is also why arc stray light deserves extra respect. Either way, the precautions below apply to both source types: a narrow band does not make an intense beam safe.

Eye hazards and eyewear

Short exposure to UV lamp radiation can severely burn the cornea. The injury is identical to welder's flash: it appears hours after exposure, feels like sand in the eyes that cannot be washed out, and takes days to heal, and some UV effects on the eye are permanent. The rules are simple. Everyone at or passing the station wears UV-blocking eyewear whenever a source can fire, the shade-5.0 UV0496 fit-overs included with both the SunSpot 2 and the SkyBeam (they go over prescription glasses) meet this, and the sport-contour UV2232 is available as an optional upgrade. And no one ever looks directly into the beam or the light guide tip, with or without protective glasses.

Skin protection

Limited exposure to UV causes erythema, reddening of the skin. Per the SunSpot 2 manual, a few seconds in the direct beam can equal a day in the sun, and extended UV exposure carries a skin-cancer risk. Keep hands and forearms out of the beam path, and wear protective clothing and cotton gloves when operating the unit. Spot curing's small spot limits incidental exposure, but treat the beam itself as a burn source.

Shielding: contain stray light at the source

Every installation should shield radiated UV so neither the operator nor anyone walking past the station is exposed. The manuals name the materials that work: sheet metal, UV-blocking acrylic, polycarbonate, or welding curtains. Because a spot system delivers light to a small localized area, the scattered fraction is small and a modest shield usually suffices, a panel or curtain between the cure point and the room, positioned so reflections off shiny fixtures and tooling can't reach nearby benches. If you design custom shielding, design it conservatively: the manuals warn that extreme care is required to ensure personnel aren't exposed, and that glasses and protective clothing are still worn even with shielding in place.

Enclosures and interlocks for automated cells

When curing moves inside a machine, enclose the cure point and make the guarding active. The SkyBeam provides an emergency safety interlock circuit on its rear terminal block: wire it to an emergency-stop or safety-guard switch and exposure stops the moment the circuit opens, exactly what a production line needs so the LEDs cannot fire with a guard door open. The SunSpot 2 builds two interlocks into the unit itself: the shutter is forced closed unless a light guide is installed and fully seated, so UV can't scatter into the room from an open port, and input power is cut whenever the lamp access panel is removed or not fully closed. Design your cell so these protections are never bypassed.

Our baseline for any new station: shade-5.0 eyewear for every operator and visitor, plus a UV-blocking shield between the cure point and the room. Heat: the hazard that isn't light

High-output sources deliver real heat at the light guide tip, and inside an arc lamp housing the lamp, reflector, and filters run hot. That drives several bench rules from the manuals:

  • Cure on a metallic or non-flammable surface. Never park a guide tip on or near anything flammable while the shutter is open or before the tip has cooled, it can start a fire.
  • Let hot surfaces cool before service. Turn off and unplug the SunSpot 2 and wait at least 15 minutes before working near the lamp; a hot lamp also needs 2–5 minutes of cooling before it can restart.
  • Respect airflow clearances. The SunSpot 2 needs 12 inches of clearance at its rear inlet and exhaust; the SkyBeam wants 6 inches on all sides, and its LED guides should operate below 40 °C.
  • Use the shutter between cures. It cuts stray light, reduces heat at the tip, and extends lamp and guide life.

LED sources run far cooler and switch on and off instantly, which shortens idle exposure, but their beams still cure adhesive and still burn eyes, so every control above except the arc-specific ones still applies. Two battery rules for the handheld SkyWand: charge its 3.7 V 3000 mAh Li-ion packs only with the supplied charger, and recycle spent packs per local disposal law, never in fire.

Common questions

Is an LED system safe enough to skip the eyewear?

No. LEDs remove the UVB/UVC and most of the heat, but the UVA beam is intense and the eye and skin precautions apply in full. Wear the shade-5.0 eyewear with every source type.

Would I feel a UV burn right away?

No, that is what makes UV dangerous. Thermal burns hurt immediately; UV burns of the eyes and skin surface hours later. Absence of discomfort during an exposure means nothing, so the controls have to prevent exposure, not react to it.

What should I build a bench shield from?

The manuals list sheet metal, UV-blocking acrylic, polycarbonate, and welding curtains. Ordinary clear acrylic is not automatically UV-blocking, specify a UV-blocking grade, and verify coverage before relying on it.

Can I look at the cure spot through the shade-5.0 glasses?

You can work around the spot with them on, that is their job, but never look directly at the light guide output or into the beam, with or without protective glasses. The manuals are explicit that direct viewing can cause permanent eye damage.
