Is the UV output dangerous?

Yes, ultraviolet radiation from this system can cause severe burns to eyes and skin in seconds. Every operator needs UV/IR eye protection, protective clothing and proper shielding.

What eye protection is required?

UV/IR protective glasses, the included shade-5.0 UV0496, the UV2232 sport style, or equivalent, any time you work near the operating system. Never view the light without them.

Can I look at the spot while it cures?

Never look directly at the light guide output, with or without UV protective glasses. Some effects of UV radiation can cause permanent damage to the eyes.

Why don't UV burns hurt right away?

UV burns are not felt for several hours. Eye exposure produces a welder's-burn effect, like sand in the eyes that cannot be washed out, with burning that takes several days to heal.

Do I need gloves and clothing?

Yes, protective clothing and cotton gloves are required to cover exposed skin when operating the unit. A few seconds of direct exposure can equal a full day in the sun.

What are the long-term skin risks?

Short exposures cause temporary redness (erythema), but extended exposure to UV radiation can lead to skin cancer. Keep all skin covered and shielded.

Is UV shielding mandatory?

All installations should incorporate adequate shielding so no one, operator or passer-by, receives direct or indirect UV exposure. Sheet metal, UV-blocking acrylic, polycarbonate and welding curtains are all suitable materials.

Is shielding hard to build for this unit?

Usually not. Spot systems deliver light to a small localized area, so scattered light is minimal and sufficient shielding is easier to construct than for flood systems. Design custom shielding with extreme care regardless.

How do I protect people walking by?

Position shielding so people passing through the work area cannot receive direct or indirect UV. Everyone working in the vicinity should also wear UV protective glasses and clothing at all times.

Is there a fire risk?

Yes, the light guide tip delivers significant heat. Placing it on or near flammable surfaces while the shutter is open, or while the tip is still hot, could result in fire.

What surface should parts sit on?

Always cure parts on a metallic or non-flammable surface. Never place the light guide output on any heat-sensitive or flammable material.

Which parts of the system get hot?

The light guide output tip, plus the lamp, reflector and other surfaces behind the lamp access panel. Allow everything to cool to room temperature after power-off before touching any of them.

Is there an electric shock hazard?

High voltage and current energize the UV lamp. Never remove the lamp access panel or attempt a lamp change before switching off the input power switch and disconnecting the power cord.

Who may service the electronics?

Only Uvitron service personnel should service the unit's electrical system. For anything beyond routine lamp, filter and fan-filter maintenance, contact support and arrange factory service.

What safety interlocks does it have?

Two. A light guide interlock keeps the shutter closed unless a guide is fully seated, and a lamp access panel interlock cuts input power whenever the panel is removed or not fully closed.

What does the light guide interlock do?

It forces the shutter to stay closed if the light guide is missing or not fully inserted, preventing UV from scattering into the work area if the unit is switched on or left unattended without a guide.

What does the access panel interlock do?

A switch contacting the lamp access panel prevents the unit from receiving input power if the panel is removed or not fully closed, protecting you from the high voltages and UV radiation behind it.

How long must it cool before maintenance?

A minimum of 15 minutes after switching off and unplugging the power cord and foot pedal. The lamp and surrounding parts must return to room temperature before you open the access panel.

What safety glasses styles exist?

Shade-5.0 UV/IR glasses in three styles: UV0496 fit-over (OTG), UV4783 sleek OTG, and UV2232 sport contour. One pair of UV0496 is included with every system.

Is the emitted light visible?

You will see an intense bluish light at the tip when the shutter opens, but much of the energy is invisible UV. Treat the beam as hazardous whether or not it looks bright, and never view it directly.

How do I dispose of a used lamp?

UV arc lamps contain some mercury and must be disposed of per local, state and federal laws. See lamprecycle.org for recycling guidance, or call Uvitron customer service at (413) 731-7835.

What if I plug it into the wrong voltage?

Connecting to the wrong input voltage causes malfunction and possibly permanent damage. Each unit is factory-set for one range, 100–120 VAC (UV1853) or 200–240 VAC (UV2132), so check your supply before connecting.

Is it safe to fit a bigger fuse?

No, replace the AC input fuse only with the same rating: time-lag 6.3 A, 250 VAC, 5.2 × 20 mm glass (UV2136). The fuse protects the power supply and lamp.

What does the front-panel warning mean?

The label warns that UV protection of eyes and skin is required. It is a standing reminder that glasses, protective clothing and shielding are needed whenever the system operates.

How do I inspect a light guide safely?

Only with the guide unplugged from the system: hold its input end toward an overhead room light and view the light exiting the tip. Never look at the tip while it is connected to an operating UV source, even with glasses.

What if the guide comes out mid-cure?

The light guide interlock forces the shutter closed as soon as the guide is no longer fully seated, so UV stops radiating into the work area.

What room conditions are safe for it?

Operate at +10 to +40 °C and 30–75% relative humidity, non-condensing, in a clean area. Keep the rear vents clear and the fan filters clean so cooling is never restricted.

What happens if it overheats?

Over-temperature protection shuts the system down at 65 °C internal temperature. Let it cool, clean the fan filters, or move it to a cooler environment before restarting.

Do nearby coworkers need protection too?

Yes, all personnel must be protected from direct or indirect exposure to the UV light. Anyone working in the vicinity of the curing system should wear UV protective glasses and clothing at all times.

Any precautions around flammables?

Keep flammable materials away from the light guide tip, never aim the open shutter at a flammable surface, and let the tip cool before setting it down. The manual flags this specifically as a fire risk.
