Curing Shadowed or Hidden UV Joints

UV only cures what it can see. A joint tucked under a component, behind a flange, or wrapped around a corner has shadowed areas the light never reaches, and those areas stay liquid. The fix is to light the joint from more directions, or to choose an adhesive that also cures without light.

Because cure needs line of sight, a single fixed guide leaves shadowed adhesive soft. Splitting the source to hit the joint from two or four angles fills in most shadows; where geometry blocks every optical path, only a secondary cure mechanism (heat, moisture, or activator) will harden the hidden volume.

Step by Step

  1. 1 Map the shadows. Look at the joint from the light’s point of view and find the areas a single guide can’t reach, under parts, behind flanges, around corners.
  2. 2 Light it from multiple angles. Use a two- or four-pole splitter to aim legs at the joint from different directions so most shadowed area now sees light.
  3. 3 Balance the legs. Check each splitter leg with a radiometer, outputs within about ten percent per leg mean every angle delivers a similar dose.
  4. 4 For true blind spots, switch chemistry. If any part of the joint has no optical path at all, no source can cure it. Use a dual-cure adhesive so the shadowed volume sets by heat, moisture, or activator.

  • Relying on one fixed guide for a wrapped or hidden joint, the shadowed side stays liquid.
  • Unbalanced splitter legs, one angle under-cures; balance with a radiometer.
  • Expecting light to bend around corners, where there is no optical path, only a secondary cure works.

How do you cure UV adhesive that is hidden from the light?

Will UV cure adhesive that oozes out under a part?
