Cleaning & Maintaining UV Light Guides

A light guide is a consumable, not a fixture. Adhesive splatter on the tip, a fouled input face, or an aging core all quietly cut the intensity reaching your joint, and the first symptom is a cure that slowly slows down. Regular inspection and cleaning keeps output up; a radiometer tells you when cleaning is no longer enough.

Liquid and fiber light guides transmit less over time as the end faces foul and the core degrades, especially with heat and UV exposure. Lost transmission means lost intensity at the joint, which shows up as longer cure times. Cleaning restores much of it; past a point, replacement is the fix.

Step by Step

  1. 1 Inspect both end faces. Check the input and output faces for adhesive, haze, or damage. A splattered or hazed tip scatters light instead of delivering it.
  2. 2 Clean per the manual. Clean the end faces with the method and solvent the manual specifies. Do not scratch the faces or force a bend past the guide’s minimum radius.
  3. 3 Measure after cleaning. Read intensity at your working distance with a radiometer. If cleaning restored baseline, you’re done; if it didn’t, the core has aged.
  4. 4 Replace an aged guide. When a clean guide still reads low, transmission loss is in the core, replace it. Match the replacement to your system (liquid guides for the SunSpot 2, LED guides for the SkyBeam).
  5. 5 Protect it going forward. Keep the tip out of the adhesive, respect the minimum bend radius, and don’t exceed the guide’s temperature rating, the three things that shorten guide life.

  • Treating the guide as permanent, it is a consumable that loses output over time.
  • Bending past the minimum radius, it permanently damages a liquid light guide.
  • Dipping the tip in adhesive, splatter on the output face scatters light and cuts intensity.
